Congress to field strong candidate at Ongole

The Congress is planning to
give a tough competition in the Ongole assembly byelection by putting up a
strong candidate, according to party sources. The election commission plans to
issue notification for byelections in the next ten days hence Congress cadre
have increased pressure on the Pradesh Congress Committee and high command to
declare the candidate. The Congress cadres had severely opposed party ticket to
Praja Rajyam leaders who became Congressmen after merger.
Mr M. Srinivas Rao and Mr P.
Anand of PR are trying for the ticket despite this. The PCC secretary Mr A.
Ghanashyam also in the race and trying for ac ticket through his political
mentor and Ongole MP, Mr Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy. Dalits, BCs and other
groups also demanding ticket for their groups claiming that their social groups
are deciding factor in the byelection. Later MP (Rajyasabha) Mr J. D. Seelam
entered the scene and indirectly indicating that Ms Parvatamma will be
announced by Congress.
The Congress feels that group
politics will come to an end and all Congressmen will work for the party
victory if it chooses Ms Parvatamma due to the name and fame of Magunta family.
Mr Srinivasulu Reddy was scheduled to go to Chennai but suddenly left for Hyderabad to meet party
leaders.
