Farmers of six mandals in Kanigiri constituency led by their MLA, Mr Mukku Ugranarsimha Reddy, staged a protest at the AP Transco office at Kanigiri on Tuesday, over laxity of Transco officials in resolving electricity supply problems. No official was present at the Transco office when the MLA and farmers came to enquire about the status of farmers’ applications for agricultural power. Office staff said that all officials were on field visits. The MLA felt that officials were reluctant to stay at the work place. He said that he had sanctioned Rs.12.50 lakh from his MLA development fund to Transco six months ago to provide agricultural electricity connections, to no avail. He said that Transco had failed to provide 8,000 agricultural connections though they were sanctioned during the Rosaiah government, and the issue was raised many times during the district review committee meets. He called the chief managing director and other higher officials of AP Southern Power Distribution Corporation Limited of Transco and lodged a complaint against the officials. Farmers alleged that Transco staff are demanding Rs.5,000 to Rs.10,000 to give an agricultural power connection. Referring to laxity of Transco officials in installing transformers in Hanumantunipadu and other mandals, farmers demanded immediate resolution of the issue to protect their electric motors from damage. Speaking to this newspaper over phone, Mr Ugranarsimha Reddy said that he was going to lodge a complaint with Transco superintendent engineer, Mr H. Harnath Rao, and meet the Transco CMD, seeking action against apathetic staff.
