The Ongole MP, Mr Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, the municipal administration minister, Mr Manugunta Mahidhar Reddy, and the Prakasam district in-charge minister, Mr Dokka Manikya Varaprasad, held discussions with the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy to select candidate for the Ongole Assembly segment for the ensuing bypoll, according to reliable sources in Congress. Several legislators of the district were also present in the meeting. Sources informed that the Congress leaders are particular about announcing the name of their candidate for the by poll as early as possible to prevent repeat of Kovur by-election results in Ongole. It may be mentioned here that the delay by the ruling party in announcing the name of the candidate for Kovur by poll is considered as one of the reasons for party’s poor show in Kovur. In this backdrop, the leaders have decided to meet the CM and request him to select a candidate at the earliest. A party leader said that a granite exporter Parvataneni Anand, former municipal chairman Manthri Srinivasa Rao and former urban bank chairman Ainabattina Ghana Syam are in the race for the ticket. Anand had contested with PR ticket in the past and defeated. Manthri Srinivasa Rao is confident of bagging the ticket because he is backed Mahidhar Reddy as well as Rajya Sabha member Chiranjeevi. Mr Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy said to be in favour of Ghana Syam. A decision is likely to be taken by April 2, the party leader said.
