Awareness
on fire prevention stressed

The fire services department
is going to bring about awareness about prevention of fire mishaps in view of
summer all over the Prakasam district. The state Disaster Response and fire
services together are conducting national fire service week from April 14 to 20
in eleven fire stations of the district. The fire services demonstrated fire appliance
and further fire fighting methods here on Sunday.
The Prakasam district fire
officer, Mr R. Gnanasundaram said that department would conduct fire prevention
inspections and demos in residential apartments, in slums to awareness on LPG
safety, careless smoking, fire hazards and electricity safety on April 16. He
added that lectures and fire drills would be held in schools, colleges and
other educational institutions to make students aware about fire mishaps on
April 17 and also in industries, petrol pumps and LPG storage godowns on April
18. In view of recent fire mishaps in hospitals, the department would conduct
fire prevention inspections and first aid fire fighting training in hospitals
on April 19.
Mr Gnanasundaram said that
department would conduct workshops and seminars on fire on April 20 all over
the district. Mentioning about historical background of the national fire week,
he said that on 14 April
1944, a ship SS Forte caught fire at Victoria dockyard of Mumbai port in which
336 people killed and 87 was injured. He added that in a bid to control the
flames of the ship 66 firemen also died in that incident hence government had
declared it as national fire services week. The fire staff distributed
pamphlets to public about saving lives through smoke management.
