Congress cadre went into a joyous mood when they came to know about the selection of Ms Magunta Parvatamma as the Congress candidate for the Ongole Assembly constituency in the byelection.
According to party sources, the Congress high command finalised Ms Parvatamma’s name for Ongole during a meeting at New Delhi on Sunday and formally informed state leaders.
Congress leaders and activists who were depressed due to non-selection of candidate for the past few days were seen happy. Some Congress senior leaders analysed that as women voters were the deciding factor in Ongole constituency, the selection of Ms Parvatamma will surely help the party win in the byelection.
Besides this, they are opining that already Magunta family was serving Ongole parliament constituency for the past several decades hence these services would help Ms Parvatamma towards attracting voters in the byelection. Ms Parvatamma was elected as Ongole MP during 1996 election after the shootout of her husband and then Ongole MP, Magunta Subbarami Reddy by Naxalites. She further won the Assembly election from Kavali constituency of Nellore district during 2004 elections.
Earlier, Congress leaders were worried about split of votes if party selects migrated Praja Rajyam leaders or non-local candidates but Congress cadre is now happy as party selected strong candidate against YSR Congress’s Balineni Srinivas Reddy and Telugu Desam’s Damacharla Janardhan.
Meanwhile, TD leaders are expecting split in votes among YSRC and Congress candidates. They are analysing that TD will get its native votes hence split would help towards win of their candidate in the byelection.
The Congress leaders said that the party high-command at State is going to announce Ms Parvatamma, as its candidate on Monday or Tuesda
