•  The inmates of government hostels are facing trouble in the absence of basic amenities in Prakasam district.
• Despite this, 57 hostels secured 100 per cent pass percentage in the recent SSC results.

Of the 117 social welfare (SW) hostels with 10,000 students, 77 BC hostels with 8,000 students and 25 ST hostels with 4,000 students in Prakasam district, 59 SW, 30 BC and 17 ST hostels are in their own buildings, the rest in tiny, private, rented ones. A total of 1,281 students of SW hostels appeared for SSC exams in which 1,091 passed and 24 hostels gained 100 per cent pass.
Similarly 1,379 students of BC hostels appeared for SSC in which 1,232 students passed and 26 hostels got 100 per cent results. Seven ST hostels gained cent per cent results as 164 students passed out of 185 appeared.
Most hostels in the district have tiny rooms, poor toilets, absence of potable water, scarcity of bed sheets and unavailability of medical treatment. State government had sanctioned Rs.18 lakh for improving amenities in hostels this year but to no avail. Last year then district collector Kantilal Dande stayed in various hostels to know hostellers’ plight under “Hostel Nidura” programme but difficulties still remains unresolved.
Girl inmates are sorely troubled due to lack of toilets and fences for their hostels. The SFI, AISF, PDSU, Kula Vivaksha Vyatireka Porata Sangham and other organisations during their survey noticed that students, especially girls were facing troubles in the absence of basic amenities.
Hostellers of the Kanigiri area are getting fluoride related diseases due to drinking fluoride-mixed ground water of borewells due to the absence of protected water supply. Student unions demand improvement of amenities and warned of agitations soon to help hostellers.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) here on Friday demanded resolution of water problems of Prakasam people with immediate effect. CPI (M) central executive committee member, Paturi Ramaiah said that district people were facing severe drought conditions and scarcity of potable water in the scorching summer. He lamented that people’s representatives have ignored the needs of public and were busy saving their posts in the present uncertain political conditions. Recalling declaration of entire district as drought hit, Mr Ramaiah demanded immediate actions to supply drinking water to people of the district.

The CPI (M) district secretary, Jala Anjaiah said that people of 35 mandals out of 56 in the district were forced to depend on fluoride water and were suffering from various waterborne diseases. He alleged despite repeated appeals by various political parties, district officials have never acted to resolve water problems. He lamented that only 727 habitations out of total 2342 in the district were getting potable water supply and alleged that 8000 hand bore pumps out of total 24148 were under repair in the district. Mr Anjaiah lamented that people in large scale submitted petitions on water woes in the recent Prajapatham but no actions was taken to mitigate the situation and warned of agitations over the issue by the party.

The Praja Padham (PP) is going start all over Prakasam district on April 15. The PP is going to hit with drinking water scarcity, poor implementation of free power to farmers, absence of medical services to rural populations, anomalies in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, absence of 25 paisa interest loans to women of thrift groups and other issues mainly in the rural areas. As many as 12 special officers were appointed to dozen assembly constituencies of the district.

The concern MLAs and other people’s representatives also going to participate in the PP and Addanki MLA, Mr Gottipati Ravikumar is going to start PP on Sunday at Addanki. Majority rural populations in 1029 villages are preparing to submit complaints mainly about absence of potable water supply, medical facility, indefinite power cuts and other local issues. The opposition parties Telugu Desam and YSR Congress are preparing to make good use of PP to bring about awareness about Congress government failures towards providing basic amenities.

The people of the Ongole Corporation and other adjacent areas were getting drinking water once for five days and the duo parties are going to highlight the same in the PP by lodging complaints in this issue. The TD and YSRC further planning to attract public towards their parties to get votes in the forthcoming Ongole assembly byelection by highlighting Congress failures in PP.  Meanwhile the Congress also planned to make good use of the programme by identifying public issues and resolving the same with the aid of PP to get votes in their party’s favour in the byelection.

The minister for urban development and municipal administration, Mr Manugunta Mahidhar Reddy, Ongole MP, Mr Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy and others are going to participate in the PP in various areas of the district.
