As many as 100 villagers were suffering from viral fevers in  Karrolu village of Pedaravidu of Prakasam district.  V#illagers alleged that poor sanitation and contaminated potable water was the cause of the epidemic. They said that N. Jayavish 40 of the village had died with viral fever on Wednesday and another 100 people were suffering from fever and diarrhea. Medical and health officials rushed to the village and started a medical camp.

Villagers said that there were no hospitals in the mandal hence they were forced to go Yerragondapalem for treatments. They alleged that water pumping motor had burnt out in the village but panchayat was supplying contaminated water without purification.

Speaking to this newspaper the district medical and health officer, Dr K. Sudhakarbabu said that medical staff was collecting blood serums for diagnosis. He added that staff was conducting house-to-house visits to bring about awareness among villagers about hygiene to curb epidemics and the department was probing death of a villager. He clarified that 20 villagers were suffering from viral fever and two with diarrhea; all were getting treatment in the camp which will be continued till improvement of health conditions in the village.

Dr Sudhakarbabu further said that department had started a camp at Veerannapalem village of Pullalachervu mandal on Thursday to treat villagers who were suffering from dengue fever. “There were no hospitals in that area except one government and another private hospital at Yerragondapalem hence department had installed a camp in the village “he said.

According to district medical and health officials, 31 suspected dengue cases were identified apart from seven deaths this year. Villagers of Jangamguntla of Cumbam mandal, Chetticherla village of Bestavaripeta mandal, Nakkabokkalapadu village of Ballikurva mandal, Sainagar of Vetapalem, Chimakurti and other areas are hit by dengue and other viral fevers. Medical and health officials have conducted medical camps in these villages to treat the ill. Last month, the health department conducted a “7 am” programme to bring about awareness on how to contain epidemics, but to no avail. Apart from RIMS hospital in Ongole, there is no government hospital in the district to diagnose dengue, thus forcing people to go to private hospitals, paying high fees. Adding to the woes, there are 44 vacant medical officers’ posts in the district with no response from government despite the demand for filling these from several MLAs. Officials say that no one is coming forward to work in rural areas. Speaking to this newspaper here on Sunday, district medical and health officer, Dr K. Sudhakarbabu, said that unhygienic conditions, impure water, stagnant garbage and mosquitoes were the causes for fevers. He added that they had asked panchayat and revenue officials to take steps to keep villages clean, but to no avail. Admitting the identification of 31 positive dengue cases in the district, Dr Sudhakarbabu appealed to people to be hygienic.

Ongole, Sept. 4: People in Prakasam district are worried about increase in dengue fever cases.

“Health emergency” was declared in the adjacent Guntur district due to largescale dengue cases, and Prakasam is also headed in the same direction, as presently 42 people are suffering from dengue and another 179 are ailing with suspect dengue symptoms.

Singarayakonda is worst-hit with 15 dengue positive cases. Chirala rural Transco assistant engineer N. Subba Rao, 34, of Ramannapeta died of dengue fever after a week long illness on Friday. As many as 15 people succumbed to dengue in the district till now.

There has been a significant rise in dengue cases in the district for the last two years. Likewise, malaria cases were also on rise. Lack of hospital facilities is forcing people of western Prakasam to go to Guntur or Vijayawada, where as the people from western reason are going to Chennai for treatment. A few people are rushing to Rims hospital at Ongole for diagnosis.

Doctors are saying that people are coming for treatment in the chronic stage, because of which, they are asking them to go to Guntur, Vijayawada or Hyderabad, in view of their critical condition. They added that if patients contact doctors in the benign stage, there were lots of chances of treating the patients.

The municipal commissioner, Mr S. Ravindrababu, said that they were dropping oil balls in the drains, fogging, and spraying to curb mosquitoes.
